Overnight from Sweden to Estonia
The Stockholm - Tallinn route connects Sweden's capital with the Estonian capital in around 16 hours overnight. The Tallink cruise ferry Baltic Queen departs Värtahamnen terminal in the late afternoon and arrives in Tallinn the next morning; along the way it makes a brief night stop in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands. Baltic Queen sails every other evening year-round, and in high season the Romantika adds further departures.
Because the ferry docks on the Åland Islands, which sit outside the EU tax area, the onboard shop is tax-free. On board you'll find several restaurants, bars, a sauna, and evening music and shows. Cars, motorhomes and pets travel on the vehicle deck. Tallink is the only operator running a direct crossing on this route year-round; Viking Line only sails direct via Åland in high summer, otherwise routing via Helsinki.

Getting to the terminal in Stockholm
The ferry to Tallinn departs from Värtahamnen terminal in eastern Stockholm, at Hamnpirsvägen 10, 11574 Stockholm. If you're driving, follow the signs to Värtahamnen port and go straight to the signposted vehicle check-in.
Without a car, the terminal is easy to reach by public transport: Gärdet metro station on the red line towards Ropsten is within walking distance, and SL bus route 76 connects the port with the city centre. Tallink Silja shuttle buses also run during the day between the terminal, the city terminals and Djurgården, with a journey time of around 20 to 30 minutes.
Check-in and departure
If you're travelling with a vehicle, check-in at the terminal opens 90 minutes before departure and closes 30 minutes before sailing, so allow enough buffer for loading. As a foot passenger you can check in online or via the app up to 24 hours before departure; on the day you can also check in at the terminal - check-in closes 30 minutes before departure here too, and boarding ends 20 minutes before sailing. Tallink recommends being at the terminal at least an hour before departure.
Stockholm and Tallinn both lie within the Schengen area, so there are no fixed border checks. Still, carry a valid national ID card or passport for security purposes; the check-in time that applies to your booking is also printed on your ticket.
On board the Baltic Queen
A berth is included on this overnight crossing: for the night on board you book a cabin, ranging from the affordable windowless economy cabin through outside cabins up to suites. For dining there are several restaurants, including the large buffet, an à la carte restaurant, a grill restaurant and quick options, plus bars, a sauna, and evening music and shows.
Because the Baltic Queen docks on the Åland Islands, which lie outside the EU tax area, the onboard shop is tax-free - from spirits and wine to perfume and cosmetics. Payment on board is cashless, with all major credit cards accepted.
Vehicle, motorhome and pets
Cars, motorcycles and motorhomes travel on the vehicle deck; make sure you enter your vehicle's dimensions correctly when booking. The car deck stays closed during the crossing, so you only have access to your vehicle at boarding and disembarkation. Arrival in Tallinn and onward travel
The Baltic Queen docks at Tallinn's D-Terminal, at Uus-Sadama 24; vehicle check-in is at Pikksilma 19/2. The port is close to the centre: it's around a 15-minute walk to the medieval old town, tram line 2 stops at Vanasadam station, and Tallinn Airport is only about four kilometres away.
From Tallinn you can explore Estonia easily with your own or a rental vehicle; if you're continuing south into the Baltic states, follow the Via Baltica towards Riga. If you'd rather get to Finland quickly, the short Helsinki - Tallinn crossing is the fast alternative at only around two hours. Since Estonia and Sweden both belong to the EU and the Schengen area, the trip is a journey within the bloc with no customs formalities for your luggage.
