Taking a motorhome to Estonia means choosing between two ferry routes: the short shuttle from Helsinki to Tallinn in just over two hours, or the overnight ferry from Stockholm past the Åland Islands. Both carry motorhomes; the difference lies in duration, cabin and approach route. Booking is done online with the ferry operator, and the dimensions determine the fare and your deck space. What counts is total length and height including all fittings: bike racks, roof boxes and tow hitches all add to the total. Standard motorhomes can be booked online directly; for especially long vehicles, tall bodies or vehicle-and-trailer combinations, contact the operator before booking. Short Crossing or Overnight Ferry
The two routes differ mainly in duration and comfort:
- Helsinki - Tallinn (shuttle): just over two hours during the day, no cabin needed. The vehicle stays on the car deck, which is locked for the crossing. Ideal if you're already travelling via Finland.
- Stockholm - Tallinn (overnight ferry): around 16 hours past the Åland Islands, with a cabin. You board in the late afternoon and arrive in Tallinn refreshed the next morning.
EU Internal Travel: No Customs Formalities
Estonia is part of the EU and the Schengen Area, and travelling via Finland or Sweden stays entirely within the EU internal market throughout. For your motorhome, that means no customs declaration and no import paperwork - a noticeable difference from long-haul destinations like Iceland. Carry your national ID or passport and your vehicle registration document; there are no fixed border checks, though spot checks are possible.
